Sushi Savior

I attempted to make scallop potatoes. I substituted potatoes with sweet potatoes and milk with soy milk. The recipe did not ask for garlic but I'm a prett-teh crazy in my kitchen, so when I want to use garlic I will use garlic. Six cloves I used.

It was not surprising that by not following the recipe at all, the dish was a complete failure. It was the most awful dish I've ever made. I couldn't even mask the awfulness with cheese.

The only way I could erase that terrible evening was to make my next three meals sushi meals.

Samurai Sushi, Sushi Moto and Sushi Garden to the rescue.

Breakfast

My last two days of breakfast!

First was the breakfast wrap. The main filler was the mushroom egg scramble. I made a quick tomato, red onion and cilantro salsa that had a bit of lime juice. The rest of the toppings were avocado, red peppers and lettuce.

Today was a typical two egg breakfast. The only difference was I made a sweet potato hash. Regular potato, get out of my kitchen!

I could not finish this meal.
I am quite concerned about my appetite these days.

Burned Skinless

This skinless chicken is the product of my continuous failure of cooking with balsamic vinegar. The charred skin was not photo worthy.

Peas turned out fine. Add water and microwave for 30 seconds.

Steamin'!

I may have miscalculated how much black beans I needed for last night's dinner... I am now left with a huge bowl and to be frank, my stomach can't handle too many nights of beans... But beans I bought and beans I must eat.

A quick tomato sauce made from campbell's soup was my attempt to make it feel like I was eating a can of beans. Sadly, no molasses.

My GOOP of the day was steamed salmon, kale and spinach.

I brought all my leftover ingredients from last night and made temakis at work.

GOOP and Me

It's going to be a GOOP week. The goal is to have every meal I make a recipe from the GOOP site. It was that or buy an item each day suggested by GOOP. I didn't feel it was the right time to spend a week buying $150 shirts each day. That's for next time... you know, when I start drinking water with gold flakes.

On the menu tonight was sushi:
Teriyaki chicken roll, spicy shrimp roll and veggie roll (tamago, spinach, cucumber, avocado)

A Real and Tasty Fable

On this lovely Vancouver Sunday morning, Elyse arranged a brunch gathering and brought us to Fable on 4th. I don't review places, but I want to spread word about this place if you haven't already heard. The decor is the often seen rustic theme these days. However, unlike some restaurants (namely chains) their wood tables and ceiling beams, and brick walls are also a reflection of their food, which adheres to their "Farm to Table" philosophy. The idea for the restaurant is to use and serve only local products.

There was a wait, but all the good ones are worth it. My smoked salmon eggs Benedict surely was.

Here's a menu eye catcher: Once a month they have Boozy Brunch. Half off drinks. I really didn't need to be persuaded to return, but incentives help.

Brunch!

Two tofu turkey breakfast patties and eggs. They're no different than the burger patties, but because I ate this around breakfast and without bread, I will call it what I want.

Favourite Of the Year

Bold to say so early in, but my goodness did I fall in love hard. I made the most amazingly delicious burger. My never ending supply of turkey has helped produce a patty more satisfying than any I have ever made. Yesterday, I surprised myself with a tofu turkey burger.

TTB Roll Call- from the bottom:

Bread
Mayo + siracha
Boiled spinach
Roasted orange peppers
Patty (soft tofu, cooked turkey, bread, cilantro, onions, siracha, dried basil, egg)
Overeasy egg
Alfalfa sprouts
Cilantro
Mayo + siracha

And with that, bread bookends my happiness.

Never Ending Turkey

It's been almost two weeks since Christmas and turkey leftovers are still finding their way in to my meals. I'm still loving it too. I'd keep adding it to my meals, but it seems after Thanksgiving and Christmas, people don't often make whole turkeys for dinner just on a regular Tuesday. I guess I could roast a turkey myself, but... I just got tired thinking about it.

Tonight was turkey and an overeasy egg on spinach, alfalfa sprouts, cucumber and avocado. Honey mustard dressing.

Must. Cook. At. Home.

The last two months of 2012 I'm certain more than half of my meals were restaurant dining or take-out. I told myself 2012 would be my I-don't-care year and 2013 would be back to Saving Shannon. Well, it's 2013 now. If I keep it up, this means this blog will have more frequent posts.

The freezer is stocked- bring it on 2013!

Tonight was grilled salmon on spinach, alfalfa sprouts, and avocados with a boiled egg... And that's right... potato slices!

The appetizer during the meal prep was hot genoa with smoked oysters on pita chips.

It was a solo night, but that doesn't mean I should only have one "course".

Solo night also means movie night.
This exchange in Charade made me laugh out loud.

Reggie Lampert: Well, wasn't it Shakespeare that said, "When strangers do meet in far off lands, they should e'er long see each other again"?
Peter Joshua: Shakespeare never said that!
Reggie Lampert: How do you know?
Peter Joshua: It's terrible. You just made it up.
Reggie Lampert: Well, it sounds right...

Steak & Potatoes

Charmaine isn't much of a meat eater, but I got her to come over for a sirloin steak dinner. Too bad I lied. I didn't have steak at home to offer like I thought. Thank goodness for my freezer hoarding ways! Pork loins it is.

My new craze: baked potato slices.
